Our Story
Lotus FABric is initiated by Suvarna and Ramya, friends who share the passion for everything exquisite, ethnic, earthy and ecologically sustainable. Synonymous with their names, they come together to bring gracious golden weaves exclusive to India. (Ramya is grace/beauty while Suvarna means golden) Together, they present Shreem Lotus Fabric, an auspicious fabric for a divine experience.
Lotus Fabric had kept Ramya wrapped in her mind for a while. Enamoured with the very thought of fabric made of lotus stalks, Ramya spoke her mind to Suvarna. Thus began the journey of discovery on a hot afternoon just before the famed Indian monsoons when Ramya and Suvarna met exceptional artisans, weavers and skilled women capable of creating magic on looms in spite of utter poverty, debilitating disabilities and unimaginable life struggles. It was as if all they had was their art and craft to sustain their breath and nothing else. A passionate affair with natural, vegan fabrics took root right then.
In the words of the founders: "Our fundamental tenet from day one of LOTUS FABric project is to support independent artisans, especially those living in challenging circumstances. The artisans put their heart, sweat and blood into producing beautiful and traditional handicraft, often unique to their region. They spend a lifetime perfecting their craft and their skills handed down from generations. Sadly, their reach doesn’t go far and middlemen play their part in keeping the craftsmen away from users.
“We are here to change that. We want to forge and nurture a link with our master artists and producers directly, visiting them in their homes or workshops over a meal or a cup of coffee. Middlemen have no role as we take orders directly.
“Whatever our artisans make is entirely handmade using only upcycled or natural materials. Each product is unique with slight variations, a mark of the artisan who made it. Largely the Artisans are in distress as machines and mass produce have spelt doom to their skill. We want to preserve their Midas touch that turns stems and yarns into shimmering works of art.”
Thus unravels the story of Lotus Fabric bringing with it the hope to support and sustain the artisans who create practical, beautiful and authentic pieces, often in unbelievably difficult circumstances, and through their masterpieces preserve Bharateeyata, the soul of Indianness. A small step to bring the joy of knowing that you are keeping alive the ancient traditions of an incredibly diverse and talented pool of people. Come, walk with us. Take home a piece of divine luxury. Love and respect always!
